India’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the Conference on Disarmament, Anupam Ray, praised the Government of India’s evolving space policy, stating that recent reforms are poised to elevate India’s growth trajectory in the global space sector. Speaking on the sidelines of the Carnegie Global Tech Summit, Ray emphasized the transformative potential of involving the private sector and harnessing the ingenuity of Indian scientists and engineers.
“We are a major space-faring nation,” Ray told ANI. “That means we have the ability to launch objects into space, fabricate and operate satellites, manage satellite applications, and monitor space situational awareness. These are significant capabilities, especially for a country from the Global South.”
He noted that India stands among a select group of nations with such comprehensive space expertise and is rapidly advancing as part of the new global space economy. “The recent changes in space policy—aimed at leveraging private sector expertise and the brilliance of our engineers and scientists—will place India on a much higher growth trajectory,” he said, highlighting the country’s readiness to capitalize on this economic opportunity.
Ray also underlined India’s commitment to transparency and responsibility in space operations. “We are a responsible participant in the global space ecosystem. We follow international rules, including those around debris mitigation, because space is a shared domain—it belongs to all humanity,” he said.
He pointed to India’s leadership in promoting confidence-building measures and international diplomacy in space governance, positioning the country as both a technological powerhouse and a diplomatic steward.
Reflecting on the commercialization of the space sector, Ray added, “India is one of the major players in the new space economy. We have a vibrant startup ecosystem and a growing body of expertise across both public and private sectors.” He concluded that this expanding capacity gives India the confidence and vision to help shape the global rules and frameworks for the rapidly evolving space industry.
